If you follow technical blogs or social media outlets, you have likely heard of the vExpert program. In fact, vExperts were recognized at Explore 2025 in Las Vegas, with one of our finest given the opportunity to speak via recorded video during the keynote! The contributions and impact of the vExpert program are felt throughout the industry and around the world.
What is the vExpert program?
The vExpert program is a no-cost professional organization facilitated by Broadcom. The program recognizes individual contributors (not organizations) who give back to the community by sharing knowledge and experiences, supporting others, and leading thoughtful conversations around VMware technologies.
vExperts come from all walks of life, cultures, and continents; at the time of this article, there are over 1,350 active vExperts representing more than 75 countries.
How do vExperts give back to the community?
The guiding principle of being a vExpert is knowledge sharing. vExperts do not preach, nor do they speak into the wind. They engage. They educate. They inspire.
Community impact is exemplified in many ways, including:
- Blogging
- Public speaking
- Podcasts
- Video production
- Code publication
- Community forum participation
- … and more
What is the value of becoming a vExpert?
Induction into the vExpert program is an honor. While you may derive satisfaction from passing certification exams, completing projects, or gaining experience through your home lab, many find an even deeper sense of purpose in giving back to the community – and feeling the support that comes with it.
When you join the vExpert program, you gain exposure to a worldwide association of like-minded industry professionals with diverse backgrounds and experiences. Think about the last time you faced an elusive technical issue or simply needed to bounce ideas off someone. Who would you ask for advice?
Many vExperts participate in a private chat platform that enables rapid, informal communication while providing the depth of expertise you would expect from fellow members. It’s the ultimate “phone a friend” experience.
The vExpert program actively supports your journey. Since my nomination two years ago, a number of doors have opened for me, both personally and professionally. The support and partnerships I’ve formed over the last couple of years have resulted in:
- Co-presenting two sessions at Explore in Las Vegas
- Participating in the Community Hackathon at Explore in Las Vegas (Our team won last year!)
- Participation in roundtables, webinars, and podcasts.
- Elevating the presence of this blog and inspiring future contributions.
vExperts are also eligible to participate in sub-programs led by the respective business units at Broadcom. These sub-programs provide access to product briefings and opportunities to engage directly with product management teams through focus groups. It’s a unique experience! After all, how often do you get to collaborate with the teams building the products you use every day?
If you are a home lab enthusiast, you will certainly appreciate complimentary membership to the VMUG Advantage subscription. I could dedicate an entire blog post to the benefits of VMUG, but the point is: vExperts receive all VMUG Advantage benefits, including 3-year VCF or VVF licenses (for home lab use only)!
There are two contingencies:
- You must be inducted into the vExpert program.
- You must pass either the VCP-VCF or VCP-VVF exam. License entitlement corresponds to the solution you are certified in.
This is a significant benefit and easily one of the top perks of the program!
What are the benefits specific to my career?
First and foremost, the opportunity to network and collaborate with like-minded professionals across the globe cannot be overstated. Over the last two years, I’ve built meaningful, lasting professional relationships that simply can’t be replicated elsewhere. The fellowship and mutual respect within the community are unparalleled.
Professional membership in the vExpert program also opens the door to public speaking. You might be surprised how many people want to participate in podcasts, roundtables, or panels, but just need a little encouragement to get started. Your vExpert peers can help guide you through those first steps, help you find your footing, and make you feel right at home among fellow speakers.
The confidence and communication skills you develop through these opportunities often extend beyond your career and into your personal growth as well.
What are the requirements?
vExperts are highly competent across many disciplines, but is not a technical achievement in itself. The most influential qualifier is community engagement and knowledge sharing.
Applicants are expected not only to contribute meaningful, technically sound information, but also to maintain an ongoing presence. A genuine interest in helping others and contributing consistently will become evident as you complete your application.
How and when do I apply?
Application periods typically run semi-annually, with the current application window closing on February 2nd, 2026. You can create an account and complete the interactive application directly on the vExpert website.
After February 2nd, the voting period begins, during which a subset of vExperts review thousands of applications. Applicants are usually notified by email within two to three weeks.
If you have questions or would like guidance specific to your application, you are encouraged to reach out to a vExpert PRO in your region. vExpert PROs are a subset of vExperts who are passionate about onboarding new applicants and helping guide the program forward.
Wrapping-up
I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as a vExpert and feel privileged to be part of the program. If you’re on the fence about applying or simply need a nudge to get started, don’t hesitate to reach out to a vExpert PRO.
I’m also happy to answer questions and offer support, even though I’m not currently part of the PRO sub-program. Best of luck, and as always, thanks for reading!
